Should you buy software or build it?
The choice depends on your workflow, total cost and ability to adapt. Start with actual needs and compare both options against the same tasks.
Test ready-made software on your tasks
Select recurring tasks such as creating an order, settling an account or correcting stock. Ask to perform them with sample data in the proposed system.
Review permissions, exports and integrations alongside screens. Configuration or a limited extension may address the need without rebuilding everything.
Compare the cost of continuing
Include subscriptions, setup, data migration, training, integrations and support. For a custom build, include maintenance, hosting and later releases.
Ask what changes when users or branches grow, and how you retrieve your data if you leave. Get commercial and operational answers in writing.
Build what is specific to your business
Custom software deserves consideration when important rules are difficult to support in available tools, or when the software is part of the service you sell.
A hybrid approach can work: a ready-made finance system and a custom customer experience, for example. Define each system’s responsibility and how records move between them.
